PICK OF THIS WEEK - Week #40
This work is by Reggie Ezell.

Send Me

The first rule for photographing any work is: Do not photograph it under glass. Well, that presented me with an itsy-bitsy, teeny weenie problem. This work is done on a mirror. After a lot of experimentation and a lot of failures I finally got a black paint to do the job I wanted. It is a special enamel that is a guaranteed not to peel off any surface. First I did the calligraphy. Then I covered the mirror with a type of contact paper (after failing miserably experimenting with several types of resist). I transferred the letters onto the contact paper with Saral transfer paper. Then with several very sharp X-Acto knife blades I cut out the letterforms. I first painted in the black enamel letters. And then I acid etched the remaining ones.

The quote is from Isaiah 6:8
I heard the voice of the Lord saying
Whom shall I send
And who will go for us
Then I said
Here am I. Send me.

The challenge for the reader is to see their own face reflected in the midst of this dialogue, and ponder what voice they hear, and what will their own response be. This is not meant to be a piece of eye candy, but a serious challenge. "How does one literally come face-to-face with a decision that requires sacrifice?” No one around here wanted their face to be photographed in it so I used one of my sculptures. Hopefully it works. LOTS of problems photographing it.
